National Honor Society
North Dallas High School - National Honor Society
Selection Procedure Description
The National Honor Society chapter of North Dallas High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each spring semester of each school year.
Students in grades ten, eleven, and twelve are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. On Dallas Independent School District Report Cards, a student must have an 85.0 or higher to be eligible for Induction into the National Honor Society. Each spring those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.
To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.
Please Note: A minimum of eight (8) hours of service is required per semester. Sixteen hours of service is required per year of NHS Membership. A student who begins in sophomore year will have forty-eight (48) service hours by graduation. A student who begins in junior year will have thirty-two (32) service hours by graduation and a student who begins in senior year will have the minimum of sixteen (16) hours of service projects to document.
Any solicited faculty input and all Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.
Nominated students must submit their completed NHS Application to: Ms. Sepulveda, Faculty Adviser, Room 221, by Friday, April 1, 2022. The faculty council will meet subsequently to vote upon these submitted applications. Students will be notified by April 29, 2022 of their decision. Induction is planned for a later date in May 2022.
